Top 20 Stampede Spirit Moments Captured by Calgary Photographers

Even though the Calgary Stampede was postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19, several programs were created by local businesses and Calgary photographers to help significantly soften the blow for so many Calgarians. Mobile pancake breakfasts, food truck drive-throughs, mini-donuts, and fireworks were all tweaked to allow a new type of Stampede to take place in a safe and interactive manner. Kudos to our friends at Calgary Stampede for putting together a memorable Stampede with Zoom backgrounds, Instagram Story stickers, country playlists, and much more.

Above all, Stampede from home photoshoots exploded throughout the summer. These home photo sessions were a unique way for families across Calgary to show off their stampede spirit while remaining safe in the comfort of their homes. Calgarians were encouraged to book an online photoshoot with us at Family Porchraits. As a result a professional photographer would show up on this occassion for a photoshoot on their porch, lawn, or backyard. We asked and families responded!

As a result, families, couples, and individuals took us up on our offer for Stampede photoshoots. The results are in and the photos are amazing! It may have taken us a bit longer than we expected to sift through hundreds of hats and boots, but we’re now ready to show off Stampede 2020 through a different lens full of backyard BBQ’s, porch hangouts, and amazing family moments. Our team of photographers snapped hundreds of photos throughout the summer. For this purpose, we’re looking back and highlighting some of the most unique and creative photos that were taken. Enjoy our top 20 Stampede from home photoshoots.

Note: All of photos below were taken as part of the Family Porchraits Stampede from home program by professional, local photographers.

20. Honorary Stampede Marshal Filipe Masetti Leite

Filipe and his girlfriend (now fiance!) are seen here in front of the iconic Calgary Stampede truck during their Stampede from home family photoshoot this summer. After arriving in Calgary as the honorary Stampede Marshal, our team was invited to join Filipe and crew for an exclusive Stampede barbeque photoshoot. It was truly a pleasure meeting Filipe and capture this important moment with our Stampede photography program. If you missed Filipe’s arrival in town, check out this emotional video that documents his arrival in town.

19. Stampede President Dana Peers

Later, we caught up with Calgary Stampede President Dana Peers and wife during their Stampede party in Calgary. In like fashion to Filipe, these two show off an amazing sense of western fashion with their Stampede-formal attire and unique accessories. In order to level up your western wardrobe, take a tip from these pros or check out the Calgary Stampede store for everything you need! #westernfashionforward

14 - 10. Stampede Couples

There’s no better date night than a stroll through the Stampede grounds. Locals as well as international visitors take in classic events like the rodeo, chuckwagon races, midway rides, concerts, deep-fried specialties, and especially nightly fireworks. As a matter of fact, there’s something for everyone at Stampede and special memories are created every time you slide on your boots. As a result of COVID-19, couples were forced to celebrate from home. Here are some couples getting into the spirit with their Stampede from home photoshoots facilitated by our Calgary photographers.

9. Mini Donuts

Nothing says Stampede like a full plate of deep-fried donuts sprinkled with icing sugar. These mini-donuts are an iconic Stampede treat that true Stampeders obviously never miss out on. We were so thankful for a special mini-donut drive-through that gave Calgarians a sense of normality during Stampede 2020. With this in mind, here is one tasty photoshoot that highlights Calgary’s special relationship with mini-donuts. Can you feel the sense of true happiness and tradition captured by our Calgary photographers?

8. Western Music

Music is a key cog in the Stampede machine. One of the biggest draws of national and international visitors are the high profile artists at various venues throughout the city, at the Coca-Cola Stage or in the outdoor tents. All throughout the Stampede you will hear country music blasting from local breweries, restaurants, and even balconies. We thought it would be fun to choose this photo of a local country artist mic’d up for a Stampede party of her own.

7. Calgary Donates!

Working with Calgary Co-op, XL103 Radio, and Calgary Food Bank was one of the highlights for our team of photographers. It is our duty to support our community. Teaming up with local businesses to raise money with the Fill Your Boots Food Drive created a major impact in the community. Specifically, we helped raise close to $200,000 throughout the Stampede. XL103 radio voices Heather and Buzz joined our Calgary photographers for a professional photoshoot at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
